Past the beginner
mistakes, no shop to ask

You've printed enough shirts to know a bad result when you see one — the problem is knowing why without a shop floor full of people to ask. Every common failure has a specific, mechanical cause, and PrintFilmReady's guides exist to name it instead of leaving you to guess again next time.

The pains at this stage

Know exactly which of four causes is behind a washed-out or plugged-up print.

Both look like "the print didn't work," but they have different, specific causes — frequency too high for your mesh, a film that isn't opaque enough, under- or overexposure. See why halftone dots wash out for the diagnostic table.

Kill moiré before it starts, instead of guessing which setting caused it.

That's moiré — your halftone fighting the mesh — and it's arithmetic, not bad luck. See moiré is a ratio problem and why 22.5°, and never 45°.

Fix registration drift even when the marks themselves look perfectly aligned.

Marks that agree don't guarantee registration — a flipped emulsion side or an unlocked screen looks identical on the exposure table and still drifts on press. See align the marks, not your eyes.

Turn a plain photo into deliberately graphic art, on purpose.

Line screen, stipple and photocopy effects, combined with blend modes, turn a photo into something that looks intentionally graphic instead of accidentally wrong. See get the settings wrong, on purpose.

Common questions

How do I tell moiré apart from a focus or resolution problem?

Moiré shows even, regular ripples across every tint on every screen, the same way each time — it exists only where the halftone and the mesh combine. A resolution problem looks soft or pixelated instead. See moiré is a ratio problem.

Why do my registration marks line up but the print still drifts?

Usually a flipped emulsion side, a print order that skipped the underbase, or a screen that wasn't locked square before you registered to it. See align the marks, not your eyes.

Can I get creative textures out of the halftone tool, not just clean separations?

Yes — line screen, stipple and photocopy effects, and combining two effects with a blend mode, are built for exactly that. See get the settings wrong, on purpose.
