Questions before you start

What counts as a film set?

One design, downloaded as a ZIP with one film per ink. Trying settings before you download is free. The first download of a design uses one of your 3 free sets; downloading or regenerating the same set again costs nothing.

Will it work with my printer and press?

Any setup that burns screens from a transparency film. Print the PNG at 100% on film or transparency with black ink only, high quality and no scaling; the dots are sized for your mesh. If the film comes out grey instead of solid black, that is the printer driver: see the printer settings guide.

Can I use it on more than one computer?

One Pro code is one seat. Extra seats for your studio or class are €12 each per year; from 5 extra seats on, seats are unlimited. The free trial needs no account at all.

What if it doesn't work for me?

Try it free first. If you buy Pro and it is not for you, you have 14 days from every payment to withdraw and get your money back, and you can cancel in one click from your receipt. Questions: support@printfilmready.com.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It is a web page. Open it in Chrome, Firefox or Safari, on a laptop or a phone, and it works. Nothing to license per seat, nothing to keep updated. Prefer an icon and offline use? You can install it as an app.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The separation, the screening and the ZIP all happen inside your browser. Your artwork never leaves your machine, which also means the tool keeps working when your shop's internet does not.

Can it separate photographs or do CMYK?

It's built for spot colours first: logos, type, illustration, bold artwork in a few inks. Pro adds a basic CMYK process mode — 4 fixed angles, elliptical dot, no ICC colour management — for a reasonable photo-ish result without a RIP. Fully calibrated, colour-managed photorealistic process work still needs a proper RIP with dot gain curves, and pretending otherwise would only cost you screens.

Does it work for printing on paper, not just shirts?

Yes, and paper is the easier substrate. A flat sheet holds finer dots than a knit and has far less dot gain, so you can move to a finer mesh and a higher line frequency — around 55 LPI at 230 mesh, or 65 to 75 LPI at 305. Pick the mesh you are actually printing with and the rest follows.

Can I use this for lino, woodcut or stencils?

Yes. Switch the halftone raster off and each colour comes out as a solid shape instead of dots — one carving guide per block, at the exact size you set, with registration marks in the margin. The mesh preset is ignored, because relief printing has no mesh.

What mesh count should I use?

On textile: 156 for standard work, 110 for opaque ink on dark garments, 230 for fine detail on light fabric. On paper: 230 for general poster work, 305 for fine art editions. Pick it in the tool and the line frequency, angle and tonal range follow automatically.

Why are my printed films grey instead of solid black?

That is the printer driver, not the file. The film itself is pure 1-bit black and white. On an inkjet, set the media type to a glossy photo stock, quality to high, and use black ink only if your driver offers it.

What does it cost?

The free trial gives you 3 film sets at 360 dpi, one of them with all your inks (the others up to 3). Pro costs €99 a year, or €59 for six months, and removes the limits: unlimited film sets and inks, 720 dpi output without the FREE mark, large format, repeat sheets and CMYK process. Extra seats for a studio or class are €12 each per year. See pricing.
